Highlands Cultural Experience
Guests are invited to discover the heart of the Highlands through authentic cultural encounters led by traditional custodians who share the meaning behind their art, customs and ancestral stories. Visitors can meet a range of iconic cultural groups including the Hagen Melpa of Mt Hagen, the dramatic Jiwaka “Tumbuna Madman” performers, the world-renowned Tari Huli Wigmen of Hela, the Simbu Skeleton Tribe, the Enga Selimoli cultural group and the Goroka Mudmen. Beyond performances, guests may also experience daily village life, witness or take part in a traditional marriage ceremony demonstration, and enjoy night cultural shows featuring local talent. For deeper immersion, private mini-festivals can be arranged exclusively for guests upon request, along with guided visits to major Highlands cultural shows such as the Mt Hagen Show and other seasonal festivals.
Guests can explore the wild beauty of the Highlands through guided nature and adventure experiences that showcase the region’s dramatic landscapes, remote valleys and rich biodiversity. For trekking enthusiasts, multi-day hikes are available including a four-day expedition to Mt Wilhelm, the highest peak in Papua New Guinea, and a three-day scenic trek across the Mt Hagen ranges passing traditional villages and panoramic highland ridges. All hiking tours are fully guided with porter support for comfort and safety. Wildlife lovers can enjoy bird watching at Kumul Lodge in Enga Province, home to rare and vibrant birds of paradise, or visit the Baiyer Green Valley Zoo to learn more about local wildlife and conservation efforts. For a slower-paced journey, guests may also travel the Highlands Highway by road, enjoying spectacular scenery, village markets and cultural landscapes on the way to the coastal regions.
Guests seeking deeper cultural connection can take part in educational and village-based experiences designed to share knowledge in a respectful and meaningful way. Visitors are welcomed into local communities to participate in daily village life, join traditional cooking sessions using both open-fire and modern methods, and learn first-hand about coffee growing and other agricultural practices that sustain Highlands communities. These experiences also include opportunities for environmental studies, open to both tourists and student groups, where guests learn from elders and cultural custodians about local heritage, land stewardship and conservation. Through these exchanges, travellers gain a deeper understanding of how traditional knowledge and modern sustainability work together in everyday Highlands life.
Guests are supported from the moment they arrive in Papua New Guinea, with seamless airport pickups, domestic flight assistance and comfortable transfers throughout their stay. On arrival in Port Moresby, guests are welcomed at the international airport, given a city familiarisation drive and assisted with hotel accommodation before connecting to Mt Hagen. In the Highlands, transport is provided from Kagamuga Airport with the option of private or shared vehicles depending on preference, all operated by local guides who know the cultural and village routes. Vehicles are safe, comfortable and suited to Highlands terrain, ensuring a smooth travel experience. At the end of the journey, guests are dropped off at the nearest airport—Mt Hagen (Kagamuga), Goroka or Lae (Nadzab)—with onward assistance for Port Moresby and international departures. Every transfer is hosted by friendly local staff who ensure guests feel welcomed, safe and well cared for throughout their entire journey.

Partnership With Local Artisans
As part of our commitment to community-based tourism, we work closely with local artisans across the Highlands to support the preservation of traditional skills and craftsmanship. These makers are custodians of ancestral knowledge, producing hand-woven bilums, carvings, traditional ornaments, and other cultural artifacts passed down through generations. By showcasing and promoting their work, we help create income opportunities within the villages while ensuring that authentic craftsmanship continues to thrive. Guests have the opportunity to purchase genuine locally made items directly from the artisans, knowing that every piece carries cultural meaning and supports the livelihoods of the families who create them.
